As Canadians we are fortunate enough to have clean water at our disposal whenever it's needed. Some of us take it for granted and don't even realize its importance in our daily lives. What's better than a cold water bottle after a good workout? Or a hot shower after being out in the cold? Although we might not be fully aware of it, water is a necessity for human life.
Unfortunately, countries like Kenya, Bangladesh, India and the Philippines don't have the luxury of fresh water. And yes, it is a luxury. Let's put it in perspective: more people have a mobile phone than access to a clean toilet. 1 in 10 people lack access to safe, running or clean water. With the shortage of water in underdeveloped countries, we see children, mothers and fathers suffer from diseases like Typhoid, Worm disease and Cholera. 3.4 million people die from these water related diseases every year. That's more than the population of Toronto and TWO times the population of Montreal. Now imagine that. Across our oceans, people are dying from something that comes so easily to us Canadians. I mean, could you even imagine yourself going without showering, brushing your teeth, drinking water for a week? Two weeks? A month?
While all of these casualties are happening around the world, together we can start making a change. Donating to a non-profit organization like Water.org can enable you to change someone's future. With the access to clean water, your donations can help make it possible for children to concentrate on school; parents to earn a living to support their families and most importantly you can save someone's life. By providing safe water and sanitation to those in need, you'll be aiding those that are less fortunate and helping them get that much closer to one of the best luxuries in life. Clean water.
